When you use a Laboratory that is accredited you are assured that the laboratory is competent to perform specific types of testing and that they are providing quality results. You can be assured that they are running the appropriate controls for patient results you can trust.
Accredited Laboratories have to be involved in external proficiency testing. What does this mean?
This is the process where samples with unknown amounts of tests substances are sent to our laboratory. We analyse them and return the results to the provider. Our results are then compared to results received from Laboratories all over the world. We are graded based on how well our results compare the correct result of the substance tested and the results of other Laboratories also.
This is where a team from the accreditation body visits the Laboratory and goes through your processes to verify that you are performing at the required standard. It is an intense process which reviews documentation at all levels from sample requisition and collection to report validation and many other practices involved in the laboratory. The team also verifies that any previous accreditation is being maintained and reviews results from internal and external audits. Any deficiencies noted by the visiting team must be corrected.
